The small intestine is 23 feet long. Can you imagine this? Inside of your stomach right now, all squished together, is a very long tube that helps you absorb nutrients from your food, balance your immune system, regulate your mood, breakdown hormones and likely, many other processes we have yet to uncover.
This long digestive tube should have relatively less numbers and variety of bacteria than the distal large intestine. Studies have shown that anywhere from 40 – 85% of people diagnosed with IBS, will test positive for SIBO via breath testing (available at Healing House with one of our Naturopaths).
What are some symptoms of having this SIBO?
Abdominal bloating after meals
Abdominal discomfort/pains after meals
Heartburn and/or regurgitation of food
Sensation of fullness and slow digestion
Chronic loose stool
Alternating bouts of loose stool & constipation
Skin issues - rosacea/eczema/acne
Headaches or migraines
Joint and muscle pain
Fatigue and/or weakness
Steatorrhea (excess fat in stool)
Do any of these sound familiar to you or do you know someone who may be suffering? If you are interested in getting assessed by one of our Naturopathic Doctors, book in online today.
