Osteopathy is a gentle form of manual therapy that uses a holistic approach to the body, aiming at restoring the body’s natural balance, and helps stimulate the body’s natural self-healing abilities.
It focuses on maintaining and restoring the structural and functional integrity of the body, to relieve pain and minimize disability.
Osteopathy uses palpatory and manipulation treatment and assessment methods to find (sometimes subtle) imbalances/restrictions in the body, in order to then release tensions/restrictions at the musculoskeletal, cranial and visceral level. By addressing those imbalances/restrictions at an early stage, besides helping relieve related aches/pains, it can also help with preventing some injuries (ex: sports-related), and speed up recovery.
This comprehensive type of manual healing therapy addresses issues of muscle/joint pain, fascia, ligaments, nerves, lymphatic system, as well as those involving the cranium (as headaches, post-concussion issues), (dys)functions of organs (as reproductive, digestive).
It can help with a variety of conditions, such as:
-neck, pelvic, and back pain
- joint pain (shoulder, knee, ankle)
- women’s health issues (as dysmenorrhea, fertility-related issues)
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- postural imbalances
- thoracic outlet syndrome
- common ailments of office workers
- digestive issues (as heartburn)
- neurological disorders
- stress management
What to expect
Prior to the first osteopathic session, you will be asked to fill out a health history questionnaire, including your primary health complaints/concerns. The first part of your visit consists of an osteopathic assessment that, along with your personal health history and concerns, will help customize the osteopathic treatments and tailor the treatment plan that would best address your needs/concerns, as well as any imbalances/restrictions noted during the osteopathic assessment.
There is no need to undress during the session, and although you can stay fully clothed, it is preferable to wear some comfortable light clothes, such as a t-shirt and jogging or yoga pants. During the treatment part of the session, the manipulations are generally gentle and comfortable, and although some brief discomfort can occur, the manipulations can be adjusted to your comfort level. At the end of the session, some recommendations (as self-stretches, exercises) can be made to optimize and/or maintain treatment results.
Some people can experience notable benefits after just one session, some others after a few more sessions, depending on their health concerns and individual body response.
